Latics moved back into the play-off spots with a resounding 4-1 win over Colchester, one of Wadsworths previous teams. Colchester were unbeaten in five games and took the lead with a superb 20 yard volley from Izzet. It almost became 0-2 but Kelly denied Barrett with a fine save.

Athletic equalised in the 23rd. minute when Smart headed home an Armstrong cross and they took the lead just before half time in spectacular fashion. With the keeper anticipating a pass into the box Murray (pictured) let rip into the top corner. This was Murray’s fifth goal. It was 3-1 in the 77th. minute courtesy of Eyres when he hit Darren Sheridan’s pass inside the far post. The icing on the cake came in stoppage time as Corazzin cut in and curled a beauty into the top corner.

Five glorious goals, three glorious points and a glorious step up to sixth place. Wadsworth said, “We have kept chipping away at the play-off places and it is nice to see our hard work paying off. There were some wonderful strikes and I never felt in any danger once we went in front. I'm especially pleased for Allan Smart to score the way he did because we have been on at him about his heading. Paul Murray's goal was extremely clever and Carlo Corazzin deserved to get one because he put in a gigantic performance.”
