The Latics won their first piece of silverware, albeit from a left over game from last season when they beat Preston in the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup at Leyland. The Latics played a 4-4-2 formation with Wellens in the middle and Wood behind him which allowed the two full backs, Edwards and Eardley, to make some decisive runs down field. Pogliacomi (pictured) had a good game and made some great saves, including a brilliant one-on-one effort that could have won the tie for Preston. Centre back spots went to Swailes, Stam and Haining, although Haining just played for 30 minutes.

The game was 0-0 at full time so went to the dreaded penalty shoot-out. Les Pogliacomi made two good saves as well as scoring a penalty for the Latics, who eventually ran out 7-6 winners in a nail-biting finish.
