The Latics travelled to Loftus road and earned a creditable point with a gritty performance. Rangers started the game with all guns blasting and Gallen almost scored in the first minute but his shot was stopped on the line. The Latics were not in it and QPR were peppering the goal with alarming ease. The Latics first shot came after 27 minutes when David Eyres unleashed a rocket which was palmed away by Culkin but their next shot, just before half time, gave them the lead.

Murray (pictured) hit a shot from 18 yards which volleyed into the net. Rangers equaliser came courtesy of a penalty after Dean Holden was penalised for bringing down Thorpe. Rangers upped the tempo but Eyres came close and then Killen got his marching orders after having been harshly adjudged to have dived. Cureton and Furlong were both denied at the death by desperate challenges but the Latics held on to retain their point and send the travelling fans home happy.

John Sheridan commented, “I'm pleased that we got something out of the game as I think that we deserved something. It was going to be very difficult for us and we've got to scrap and fight for every point now. It's getting very tight at the bottom. We knew that QPR are a good team. First 10 minutes we said we've got to weather the storm and not let the crowd get behind them. I thought first half we deserved the 1-0 score-line. I was pleased to go in at half time leading.”

“On the penalty - If that was a penalty I think we should have had one first half, that's all I can say. I'd like to comment on the referee. I believe he was being assessed today and I'd love to see the report on him. Some very strange decisions, most of them went against us, so I'll look at the video. Apparently he sent Chris Killen off for diving and that's a joke. I can't believe Chris would have dived when he was clean through. As a team I was happy. We didn't play well particularly but we battled. We've played a lot better and not got anything from games so I'm pleased to get something. We defended well when we had to. Les made saves when he had to and the lads got tackles in when they had to.”
