Oldham climbed off the bottom of the League One table with a 2-1 victory at luckless Scunthorpe thanks to an 83rd-minute header from substitute Matt Smith.

Iron midfielder Garry Thompson rattled the underside of the bar before David Mellor fired the visitors in front with a right-foot shot in the 16th minute.

The visitors had a chance to extend their lead early in the second half when Chris Taylor went close, but Scunthorpe suddenly sprang to life with a superb 64th-minute solo equaliser from striker Chris Dagnall.

The home side continued to press forward and Mark Duffy was unlucky with a shot that hit the inside of the post but stayed out.

And it was Oldham who snatched their first win of the season when substitute Smith outjumped the home defence to head home from a free-kick.

In stoppage time Scunthorpe were denied by the woodwork again when a shot from substitute Bobby Grant crashed against the bar - and Oldham finished with 10 men when centre-back Jean-Yves Mvoto was sent off for his second yellow card.
