Latics boss Paul Dickov was not impressed with the mistakes that robbed his team of getting something out of their long trip to Southampton. The players failed to learn from previous similar errors which lead to their defensive frailties. Dickov explained, "We were 1-0 up, playing well and looking comfortable. We are constantly telling players to pick up from set pieces and Oumare Tounkara didn't do so as he allowed their man to score. We also tell them not to give away silly free kicks around the box which we did with 30 seconds left of the opening half with their guy in the corner."

"Both goals were schoolboy stuff and we need to be more professional. It can happen once and you are disappointed when it happens twice, but it has done so 12, 13 or 14 times. If we are going to do anything this season, we won't do it the way we played today. We have to eradicate the mistakes. It is up to me to sort it out, and I will. We had seven or eight who didn't play well, and you are not going to a win a football match doing that. We are better than we showed today."

Dean Furman had given the visitors the lead midway through the first half when he popped in his fourth goal of the season after a pass from Chris Taylor. It was in first-half injury time when the Saints equalised after Furman had conceded a free kick near the corner flag and Fonte headed home from the resulting free kick. The match was over in the 72nd. minute after Chamberlain fired home a low shot. The Latics went all out with a 4-3-3 formation in the latter part of the game and Taylor was dreadfully unlucky to see his 'unstoppable' shot pushed round the post by the Saint's keeper. Taylor, the rest of the team and travelling Latics faithful couldn't believe the remarkable save as the shot had 'goal' written all over it when it left Taylor's foot.
