Oldham Athletic continued their promotion push with a nervous victory away to neighbours Stockport County.

The Latics were saved by a thunderbolt of a David Eyres free-kick two minutes before time in a frantic affair at Edgeley Park.

Earlier, Paul Murray, who was inspirational for the visitors, put Iain Dowie's side in front after only eight minutes.

The midfielder was on hand to fire home past a crowd of bodies after Tony Carss had seen his header cleared off the line.

However, John Daly pulled a goal back for the Hatters a minute after the break as Carlton Palmer's struggling side attempted to shock their high-flying opponents.

But when Eyres hit his late goal there was no hope for the home side who trudged off in dismay at the final whistle having failed to pick up the point they so deserved.

However, County did have their fair share of chances, best of which came through leading scorer Luke Beckett, who saw an effort go agonisingly wide of the right upright as well as seeing his curling right-footed shot rebound off the crossbar.

Wing-back Ali Gibb was also unlucky in the 28th minute after his halfway line dash had resulted in him firing the ball past David Miskelly but against the inside of the post.

Wayne Andrews had a shot on the stroke of half time for Oldham, but that went wide of the right upright.

Oldham pushed for a second but were shocked by Daly's early goal after the interval and had chances to make more of their victory.

Danny Boshell had a free-kick well saved by Ola Tidman, after Peter Clark had carelessly given a foul on the edge of his own penalty area.

At the other end, Daly went close at the near post after being threaded through by Aaron Lescott, while second-half substitute Carlo Corazzin had an effort blocked by County's keeper.

Gibb came close to scoring after Beckett's cross from the left in the 69th minute, but it wasn't to be for the home side, who are still deep in trouble at the bottom of the division.
