Torquay breathed new life into their fight to avoid relegation with a key victory over fellow strugglers Oldham.

On-loan Leon Constantine made it two goals in two games with an early volley. And striker Martin Gritton hit his sixth goal of the season to clinch victory in the 71st minute.

Constantine hit 25 goals for Southend last season, but he wasn't able to hold down a regular place at Peterborough before Barry Fry let him out to Torquay.

He took only 15 minutes to open his account in a 3-3 draw at Swindon last week.

Against Oldham he pounced on a mix-up between Oldham defender Dean Holden and keeper Leslie Pogliacomi to volley Torquay in front after only nine minutes.

Defender Steve Woods provided the long through ball and Constantine's cool, angled volley did the rest.

Oldham striker Aaron Wilbraham sent a snap shot just over the bar when he should have hit the target after only 29 seconds.

But that was just about the nearest that the Latics came to scoring in the whole match.

They hardly forced a serious save from Torquay's Icelandic keeper Olafur Gottskalksson.

Torquay dominated the first half without finishing their opponents off, Tony Bedeau, Alex Russell and Constantine all going close.

It took Oldham 55 minutes to force even a corner. But it would soon become clear that Torquay had gone badly off the boil in the second half.

Head coach Leroy Rosenior responded with a key substitution, sending on experienced midfielder Jason Fowler for striker Adebayo Akinfenwa in the 64th minute.

It enabled Martin Gritton who was forced into service as a left-winger, to revert to his favoured striking role.

Seven minutes later Constantine supplied the through ball and Gritton raced clear to score with a left foot shot past the advancing Pogliacomi and in off the post.

From then on Torquay concentrated on making sure that Oldham did not recover during a scrappy last 20 minutes. Oldham have now won only once in ten league games, while Torquay are starting to show signs that they might avoid going straight back down after their long awaited promotion last season.
