Latics and Leicester fight out for a draw

Athletic fought out a tense battle with Leicester City at Boundary Park. Leicester were on the back of five successive away wins and undefeated on their travels while the Latics were sustaining an undefeated home record. The match was brought to life when Steve Howard opened the scoring for the visitors after a disputed free kick was awarded but Danny Whitaker (pictured) scored a remarkable equaliser to deny City another win.

Manager John Sheridan confessed that he was happy with the result even though the home side had enough chances to seal the victory. He told Latics World, "Obviously I wanted to win the game, but I'm pleased with how we went about things. I don't think it was a particularly good game, but there was lots of effort and two very good teams out there. Leicester are definitely the best team we've played so far. They hit the post in the first half but I thought it was more or less even stevens."

"The second half was very pleasing. We played well and showed a lot of character after going a goal down. I was disappointed with the goal and it shouldn't have happened, but we did well to respond in the way we did. After the goal we were maybe trying to win the game a bit too much and leaving ourselves open on the counter-attack. I definitely thought we matched them in all areas."

"It was a great goal. Danny was very calm, took it onto his weak foot and it was an excellent finish. He put it right in the top corner, which is something he does all the time in training. We upped the tempo in the second half and if we can carry on doing that we will get a lot of good results in this division."
