Latics put in offer for Maher

The rumours that Athletic have been chasing free-agent midfielder Kevin Maher have been confirmed by manager John Sheridan. The 31 year old was recently released by Southend and has been training with League Two Gillingham.

Shez said, "Kevin is a very good player who has won promotion from this division before and played at a higher level, as well as captaining his previous club for a number of years. We need leaders on the pitch - people who organise and boss people around. I've got one or two who can do that, like Sean Gregan, Andy Liddell and Mark Crossley, but he could help to do that job. I've got some very good young players but they need help on the pitch and can't just hear my voice all the time."

"I can call on a few players with leadership skills but another addition certainly won't do us any harm. Everyone knows I want a central midfielder and a left-back, and if we can draft in new blood in that area I will be very pleased."

An offer has been made and Athletic are waiting for a response.
