Maher - "The points were the be all and end all really"

Gillingham midfielder Kevin Maher, who spent last season playing for the Latics, told his version of the win over Athletic to the Gill's official website by saying, "Obviously the conditions were terrible and it was really hard to get the ball down and play but it was one of those games where the result was all important. Given the position we were in it was vital we picked up all three points so that's moved us up the table again I think. The pitch wasn't the best and, like I said, conditions weren't the best either; it was so swervy and windy but I think at times we tried to get it down and play. When it was on to play we tried but you've just got to play to the conditions. The points were the be all and end all really."

"As a team I think we looked in control today, you know, I didn't think we looked like conceding. They didn't open us up at all and that's a big plus point for us to take into away games and I'm sure we can start to pick that up too. I don't think there are too many teams with better home form than us in the league so if we can add a little bit to the away form then hopefully we can push up the league a bit further. I had a good time at Oldham to be honest, there are a lot of good people up there and I enjoyed my time. But then winning against your old teams is always nice and that's two weeks in a row so it was particularly pleasing."
