Noose tightens as Latics go into Administration

At 10am on Tuesday morning, news broke that the Latics have entered Administration in order to fight off the threat of extinction.

The move means that the Latics will be able to re-structure current debts in order that the club can continue to function however the Latics have revealed that a total of £1.2m must be raised by September 30th (£500,000 for current debts and £700,000 to complete the season.)

Todays news comes through the actions of the Latics biggest creditor, the Inland Revenue, as it is those who have continued with winding up proceedings. This has given the Latics little option but to accept that Administration is the only way to survive at present.

Now, the Latics must hope that the Trust and other organisations can raise the necessary funds to complete the season, however that might mean at least one significant creditor will lose out - the fans! Once the club is re-instated on October 1st, should finances be sufficient to complete the season, the club will be running as a new company - one which has no obligation to honour the current Latics season tickets.

Whichever way fans choose to view this scenario, the Latics situation is indicative of the current footballing climate and only a wholescale change in footballing practices will guarantee that lower league football has a future. Whether such changes will happen, we will wait and see (signs are that realistic wages are now being applied in lower league football which is a start) but will the Latics be around to see a better run Nationwide league? One way or another, come September 30th we are sure to find out.

Keep the faith!
