Oldham Rugby to return to Boundary Park?

Oldham Rugby could be playing at Boundary Park if a deal being thrashed out with Oldham Council goes through. It is also possible that a new club will be formed to manage both teams. The Latics are losing £50,000 a week and the
deal is hoped to bring some stability to the club and consequently stop them going into administration.

The Latics chairman Chris Moore has already invested £3.6 million into the club but they could lose £2.6 million this season if the current loss rate is allowed to continue. Councillor Chris Hilyer, commenting on the situation said, “The council
appreciates all too well the importance of professional sport in the borough, and that is reflected in the assistance we have given to both clubs in the past. The most recent examples of these are the investment made in the new playing surface at Boundary Park and the sponsorship deal with Oldham rugby for the season just ended. We are currently working with both clubs to develop a proposal to secure the future of professional sport in the borough. Future use of
Boundary Park by both clubs will be central to any agreement reached.”

Three years ago the council spent £3 million buying Boundary Park to clear Athletic’s debts. At that time the club was losing £1million a year.
