Rushden & Diamonds relegation to the Third Division could work in Athletic’s favour. Brian Talbot was trying to negotiate with them over the transfer of Rodney Jack (pictured), one of the top earners at R & D, who could now be released to lower the financial burden on the club. Jack (31) was signed from Crewe Alexandra when Talbot was manager at Nene Park and although new owners are expected to take over, cash will be at a premium. A small fee may be requested as Jack still has a year to run on his contract.

Talbot has now been allocated his budget for next season and along with Jack has been keeping his eyes on Lee Peacock (Bristol City), Steve McPhee (Port Vale ) and Paul Heffernan (Notts County). Existing players Danny Hall, Adam Griffin, Marc Tierney and Danny Forde are all contracted to the club and will remain while Paul Murray and Les Pogliacomi have been offered new contracts. Mark Bonner, Jermaine Johnson, Steve Corry, Wes Wilkinson, Darren Sheridan, Danny Boshell, Will Haining, David Eyres and Ernie Cooksey will all be free agents soon and their futures are uncertain.
