Shez looks over his shoulder

Latics manager John Sheridan is looking over his shoulder after failing to win a play-off spot for his team. Sheridan has had a reasonably successful second season but still believes he will be fighting for his managerial future when Athletic kick off the 2008-09 season.

He said, "I know the situation. Not many managers keep their job for three years unless they achieve something. It's going to be a massive season for me personally because I know I've got to improve myself and my team. I need to get us out of this division as soon as possible and I'll need a squad of players who all feel the same, so I'm already looking ahead. Some of our performances have been poor this season and I know exactly what I want to make us better."

"The players will be coming in because I want them fit and strong and raring to go next season. They look after themselves during their time off, but I want to keep on top of them. They've got to be ready. We haven't got off to a good start in the last two years, so next time I want us in a strong early position which will stand us in good stead. Everything will be aimed at getting it right from the start. We've got friendlies against good opposition and I'm looking for players who will give us more quality."
