Verona striker latest target

More big-time names are being touted at Boundary Park and the latest rumour mill is that the Latics are poised to sign Verona striker Craig Davies. The Welsh international is valued at more than £100,000 by his Italian club and it beggars belief to think the Athletic are able to link themselves to players of this calibre. One wonders as to the sincerity of these rumours and if Athletic are poised to make such a swoop, would it not be better to keep it quiet until the deal is done?

Simon Corney confirmed the bid by saying, "Craig Davies is quite an ambitious target, but we are very keen to sign him permanently. We have been tracking him for a while because he has the ability and the pace to become a huge asset for our team. It would be expensive to bring him in, but sometimes you need to speculate a little if you want to get the right players. At the moment Verona are looking for a six-figure fee, but hopefully our negotiations might bring that down quite significantly. We hope Craig would represent value for money, and he was very highly recommended by Wolves when we asked for their opinion. He is someone we like and admire. The way he performed against us in the cup last season showed he is a very talented player."
